FON and 15 minutes of security
Posted by coldtobi | 13 Jun, 2007, 22:23At the moment, Fon advertises that by watching an ad video, a guest can surf 15 minutes. (See here: english, german). Reading the FAQs reveals some interesting infos:
How many times can users see a WiFi ad and get a free trial?
Answer
All users will only be able to get a free trial once a day per user and device. [Quote from Fon's FAQs]
well, nice promotional idea, but not really compatible with their own securiy policy:
Remember! FON is a Community of registered users. All Foneros are required to enter their username and password to access the FON Community. NO KEYS, NO FON. The security and protection of all Foneros is safeguarded. The La Fonera updates reinforce your connection's security! Keep your La Fonera online...it updates automatically! How is that compatible?
Comming back to the requirements of the promtion: Per user, per day, per device. In fact, that means "unlimited internet for free", for a skilled computer user. It sounds like they are checking e.g the MAC Address of the wireless card, and that can be really easily forged, and registration of fake accounts is also not that hard (if that is necessary -- the FAQs are ambigious at this point.)
Therefore, for the time being, I disable my fon until this promotion is gone. Why? Read here.
